Chapter Nineteen

Justin sat near the hearth in his bedchamber. The worst of the illness had passed, leaving him restless. Days spent in Isabel’s company had not improved his disposition. There were moments when he caught her looking at him with warmth hot enough to blister, and others when her glance turned to frost against his skin. At times he felt certain she wanted him to touch her. Other times he was equally certain she could not stand the sight of him. He knew she was playing a game with him; all women played games. He just hadn’t deciphered the rules. Confound her!

Justin glanced at his brother, who stood near the hearth, frowning at him. “Did you find someone to do the job?”

Clayton rested his arm on the grey marble mantel. “Are you supposed to be out of bed?”

“The spots have faded, and I have had more than enough of lying about in bed.”

“As I recall, once the spots were gone I was in battle the next day. Fortunately, you only have to attend a ball in a few days.”

Justin stood and marched to the windows, the emerald green silk of his dressing gown brushing his bare legs below his nightshirt. “Blasted ball. I do not know why Sophia feels she has to thrust Isabel into the stew of the ton.”

“I suppose she sees no reason to keep her hidden away from the rest of the world. I believe Isabel will be a great success. Apparently the queen was quite taken with her when she was presented yesterday.”

Justin glared at the rain splattering against the windowpanes. “Every damn fortune hunter in London will be drooling over her.”

“You underestimate Isabel, brother. I wager she will charm a legion of men who have no need at all for her dowry. She already has a following, and Sophia has only given London a few glimpses of her. Ashbourne, MacKinnon, Hanley, Newbridge and a dozen more have paid morning calls every day. Prinny saw her when she was at court. Sophia said she had to divert him when he attempted to show Isabel one of the private galleries.”

“Damn lecher.” Justin knew far too well how easily Isabel could charm a man. He leaned his shoulder against the window frame and tried not to think of the infuriating little enchantress. Yet shoving Isabel from his mind had become a herculean task. “Did you find someone to do what I want?”

“I am not certain anyone can do what you want.”

Justin glanced at his brother. “I did not think it would be easy. I thought you might know someone from your war days. Someone who knows how to go about getting information.”

“Last night I spoke with Daventry when I was at White’s.”

“Why the devil would Daventry be interested in this?”

“Daventry and I were on several missions in France together. Apparently he has been bored since the war ended. He found a new hobby horse a few months ago, when a certain lady asked him to help her retrieve her diary from a blackmailer.
